Interior metal studs help you across all three LEED v4 BPDO credits, are nearly zero waste since they always get recycled, and are non-emitting, so you don’t have to worry about anything in the low-emitting category. How much better could you get?
So Lets. Get. Metal.
Metallica. Judas Priest. Black Sabbath. Iron Maiden. Marino Ware?
When you look at the top ranked metal bands of all time, Marino Ware won’t be on the list – but they will be on the list of what could be one of the most perfect products for helping you earn your LEED materials credits. You may have guessed it – its interior metal studs (or cold-formed metal framing).
Interior metal studs are proven to be champs of the LEED world. EPD – check. Recycled content – check. HPD – check. 100% recyclable – check. Costs a bunch of money to help rank up percentages – check. On almost any and every project – check.
I think you get the picture here.

There’s also a number of companies out there that are producing these gems. Sure, there’s an industry-wide EPD, but go for the good stuff.
The following companies all provide options that hit the trifecta of EPD/Recycled Content/HPD. There’s a ton of products and options covered too, so you’re bound to find something you need.
NOTE: USGBC does not count all the components as separate products for EPDS or Material Ingredient credits – i.e. a metal stud, track, and clips count as 1 product – not as 3 – since they are all required to work together. So rack up that total cost for recycled content, but it will only help you as 1 product for the other credits.
To sum it up, interior metal studs make great contributions to your LEED project. If you can, take the extra step to get project specific recycled content rather than their national average, and you may come out even further ahead.
