What is California SB 253?
California SB 253 is a law that passed in 2023, requiring companies doing business in California with over $1 billion in total revenue to report their Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 carbon emissions.
Does SB 253 Apply To Your Business?
If you answer yes to both questions, you'll need to report your company's carbon emissions starting in 2026.
- Did your company generate over $1 billion in revenue last year?
- Does your company work in California, even on just one project?

How To Comply With SB 253
Qualifying companies must publicly disclose their Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 carbon emissions. These will be evaluated by an independent third-party reviewer approved by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Companies will need to start disclosing Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions in 2026, and Scope 3 in 2027.
