Does SB 253 Apply To Your Business?

If you answer yes to both questions, you'll need to report your company's carbon emissions starting in 2026.

  1. Did your company generate over $1 billion in revenue last year?
  2. Does your company work in California, even on just one project?

How To Comply With SB 253

Qualifying companies must publicly disclose their Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 carbon emissions. These will be evaluated by an independent third-party reviewer approved by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Companies will need to start disclosing Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions in 2026, and Scope 3 in 2027.

California SB 253 FAQ

How does SB 253 affect my construction company? Expand

SB 253 requires companies with annual revenues over $1 billion that do business in California to report their greenhouse gas emissions. For construction companies, this means tracking and reporting emissions from various sources, including offices, equipment, transportation, and materials. Green Badger's software is specifically designed to help construction companies meet these requirements efficiently and accurately.

What types of emissions do we need to track for SB 253 compliance? Expand

You'll need to track three scopes of emissions:

  • Scope 1:  Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources (on-site equipment, company vehicles, etc.)
  • Scope 2:  Indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling (utility bills for offices and jobsites)
  • Scope 3:  All other indirect emissions in your supply chain (e.g., embodied carbon in materials, employee commuting, waste disposal, business travel, and more)

Green Badger's platform is tailored to capture all these emission types in construction.

We're not based in California. Do we still need to comply with SB 253? Expand
