Green Jobsite Kit

General contractors often do not have any control over what they build, or where they built it. They can use their influence to encourage projects to pursue 3rd party sustainability certifications like LEED, Envision, SITES, and so on, but ultimately the final decision on this comes from the project owner. The one thing General Contractors do have control over (usually) is the practices that happen on the construction site. Green Badger has created an extensive group of resources to help general contractors with improving sustainability on construction sites.

Wellness Plan

A key component of improving sustainability on construction sites is including efforts to improve the health and wellness of everyone on site. Creating a jobsite wellness plan is the first step in this - it gives your project teams the space to think about the different things that affect health and wellness, and what opportunities are available for each project team to make improvements.

Download Wellness Plan Template

This sample jobsite wellness plan includes an outline, as well as some examples of health and wellness tactics that can be implemented. The health and wellness categories featured in the sample jobsite wellness plan include:

  • Air Quality Management
  • Nourishment
  • Hygiene
  • Fitness and Physical Wellness
  • Mental Wellness Support
  • Severe Weather Exposure Preparedness

Anti-Idling Policy

Idling vehicles contribute to air pollution and emit air toxins, which are pollutants known or suspected to cause cancer or other serious health effects. Limiting a vehicle’s idling time can dramatically reduce the amount of pollutants and exposure to them. If your company does not already have an anti-idling policy in place, you can use our sample anti-idling policy and modify it as needed to reduce emissions on-site. The policy includes guidance, exceptions, and how it can be monitored and enforced.

Green Jobsite Signage - Sign preview

Green Jobsite Signage

Signage can be a powerful tool to remind everyone on the site that their actions have an impact on the overall sustainability of the construction site. Sometimes, site employees may forget what the policies for sustainability on the construction site include. Hanging signs in different areas can help teams remember the sustainability practices.

Our kit currently includes the following signs in English and Spanish:

  1. Anti-idling for personal vehicles/parking lots
  2. Anti-idlings for trucks/loading unloading zones
  3. Recycling
  4. Water conservation
  5. Hydration reminders
  6. Sun protection reminders
  7. Break areas

ESG Metrics Worksheet

Benchmarking is a critical part of implementing ESG in your organization, because you need to know where you are before you can determine where you need to go. We’ve all heard the phrase, “you can’t manage what you don’t measure” and that is absolutely the case when it comes to ESG.

Flush Out Kit

During construction, various materials and processes can introduce airborne pollutants such as dust, particulates, and off-gassing from building materials. Implementing flushing out procedures during this phase helps to mitigate the accumulation of these pollutants, ensuring that the indoor environment remains healthier and more comfortable for both construction workers and future occupants.

LEED v4.1 Submittal Cover Sheet

There is no industry standard for LEED submittal cover sheets. You can create your own, see if anyone on your project team has a standard template they've used in the past – or you can download our free submittal cover sheet template for submitting your LEED v4.1 product data.

Download the LEED v4.1 Materials Submittal Cover Sheet Template

Using a LEED Submittal Cover Sheet

There are some pretty easy best practices that can really facilitate the documentation for materials and even low-emitting products.

Here’s one that you think would be commonplace, but at least in this Badger’s neck of the woods (literally), we don’t see all that frequent – using a required LEED Submittal Cover Sheet for all subcontractors. By having a coversheet, where you require the subcontractor to provide cost and any relevant LEED data (recycled content percentages, distance from extraction and manufacture, VOC content, etc), you get all this information upfront. Or reject the submittal and send it back. Pretty straightforward.

Our submittal cover sheet template has sections to record information about:

  • Manufacturer Name
  • Product Name
  • Product Costs (only exclude install labor) ($)
  • Product Specific (PS) or Industry-Wide (IW) Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
  • EPD Optimization (GWP reduction)
  • FSC Certified Wood Products (%)
  • Post-Consumer Recycled
    Content (%)
  • Pre-Consumer Recycled Content (%)
  • Extended Producer Responsibility
  • Material Ingredient Reporting (to 1000 ppm)

Send out the LEED submittal cover sheet to all subs at the beginning of the project, let them know it is required, boom – you’re on your way.

No more getting 175-page submittals from the subs saying, “Here’s my LEED stuff”. This puts the onus on them to find the exact LEED information, making them part of the process, and making your life easier. We also provide some additional references, notes, and definitions in the second tab of the spreadsheet for you!

Our template also has sections to track VOC content related to:

  • CDPH Emissions testing compliance
  • VOC Content (g/L)
  • Wet-Applied Products Volume Used (L)
  • If Wood Products are ULEF or NAUF12
  • If Wood Products are CARB exempt

If you've read our Ultimate Guide to LEED v4 Construction, you'll know that developing and implementing an indoor air quality (IAQ) management plan for the construction and preoccupancy phases of the building is required to earn the IEQc3 credit – and this template is a great place to start!

Construction Waste Management Template Download

Having a good construction waste management plan is the first step towards earning MRc5 Construction Waste Management in LEED v4.1. First of all, it is required for the pre-requisite under MRp2 to have a construction waste management plan.

Download the Construction Waste Management Plan for LEED

Importance of Using a Construction Waste Management Plan Template

You have to have a plan that identifies what waste is going to be generated for the project, and what means will be implemented to divert from landfills. You need to identify at least 5 different materials in your plan, even if you only need 3 in implementation to earn the points. Looking for more strategies for earning LEED construction waste management credits? Read our MRc5 credit guidance here.

Working through this construction waste management plan template with your waste haulers will help you identify:

1) What the optimum dumpster placement strategy will be
2) Where those materials are going to be going
3) And what the estimated totals will be.

Reviewing the construction waste management plan template early will help the team know they are on course to hit the material streams required under the credit. Not thinking this through, and trying to throw it together at the end of construction can lead to not earning any points and leave everyone frustrated.

Communication Plan:

  • Waste Prevention and recycling activities will be discussed at the beginning of each safety meeting, with a progress update provided.
  • As new subcontractors come on-site, the recycling coordinator will present him/her with a copy of the Waste Management Plan and provide a tour of the recycling/staging areas
  • The subcontractor will be expected to make sure all their crews comply with the Waste Management Plan
  • All recycling containers will be clearly marked and labeled with bilingual signage
  • Lists of acceptable/unacceptable materials will be posted at the job trailer

Example Construction Waste Management Plan Template Information:

Waste Management Goals: This project will recycle or salvage or divert 50 OR 75% by (weight or volume) of the total construction and demolition waste generated on-site.

  • Meet LEED Requirements for the project: Divert materials from at least five waste or material streams. Approximate a percentage of the overall project waste that these materials represent.

Targeted Materials: The following waste streams are targeted for diversion, along with the approximate percent that each material comprises of the total waste stream (must be at least 5 different waste or material streams).

  1. Concrete – 40%
  2. Metals – 15%
  3. Wood – 10%
  4. Masonry – 10%
  5. Gypsum Board – 10%
  6. Cardboard – 5%
