LEED MRc5: Construction Waste Management

Construction waste management is pursued on nearly every LEED project, and for good reason. With proper planning, two points are achievable. But can project teams really hit the waste reduction goals? If your project has a ton of demolition it will make earning more than 1 point for the LEED MRc5 credit may be a challenge. For this reason, we’re providing you guidance for both LEED v4 and v4.1 because if your project hasn’t registered specifically under v4.1 then you have the option to choose.

Download the LEED MRc5 eBook

Download the LEED MRc5 eBook to get all the requirements, strategies, and best practices to achieve Construction Waste Management for LEED v4 and v4.1

Requirements for LEED MRc5 in v4 and v4.1

Develop an implement a construction and demolition waste management plan and achieve points through waste prevention and/or diversion.

Waste Management Plan and Report:  All projects must develop and implement a construction and demolition waste management plan

  • Identify strategies to reduce the generation of waste during project design and construction
  • Establish waste diversion goals for the project by identifying the materials (both structural and nonstructural) targeted for diversion.
  • Describe the diversion strategies planned for the project. Describe where materials will be taken including expected diversion rates for each material.

Having a good construction waste management plan is the first step towards earning LEED MRc5 Construction Waste Management in LEED v4.1. First of all, it is required for the pre-requisite under MRp2 to have a construction waste management plan. If you need a construction waste management plan template, you can download our template here. You have to have a plan that identifies what waste is going to be generated for the project, and what means will be implemented to divert from landfills. You need to identify at least 5 different materials in your plan, even if you only need 3 in implementation.

Green Jobsite Gudielines

While back at the home office, employees benefit from LED light, air monitoring, healthy snacks and EV charging. It often is very different at the jobsite trailer - where teams may be spending the next 24-36 months of their lives!   That's where this guide comes in - to laser focus efforts on creating greener, more sustainable, healthier, and safer construction sites where the majority of employees spend their day.

Download Green Jobsite Guidelines

The guide is split into two sections:

  1. Tactics for inside the office trailer/site workspace
  2. Tactics for improving sustainability on the construction site

Each section in the guide includes the categories of Energy & Carbon, Water, Waste, Air Quality, and Health & Wellness.

For each section of this guide, we have provided a list of ideas for improving the jobsite. Each list is divided into three tiers. Tier 1 includes strategies that are relatively to implement, and/or are no or low cost. Tiers 2 and 3 can be slightly more challenging and may require extra effort from the project team to successfully implement. The team should choose the strategies from the lists below that will work best for their project site, team composition, and project type.

Interior Architectural Finishes & Furniture for LEED

It’s one of the worst feelings for an interior designer: you put your heart and soul into a great design only to face last-minute changes dictated by factors outside of your control.

Design in construction can get messy. Even with the best planning and foresight, commercial specifications can still change at the end of a project due to a wide variety of reasons but some of the most common are value engineering, pricing, and availability of products.

Download the eBook

Architect Referral Program - CTA

The goal of value engineering in commercial architecture and interior design is to optimize for the best balance between design functionality, aesthetics, and cost. Meanwhile, market forces, including changes in product availability and cost of labor, can quickly impact a project's budget, forcing project teams to revise specifications to accommodate. Then there are times when owners simply get tired of forking over cash and ask for budget cuts.

You often compromise your design with these alterations, and you likely need to rush to make them to the drawings and finish schedule in order to meet construction schedules.

Interior designers have to be ready and flexible to adapt to potential changes. And with so many factors to consider when specifying your materials selection, including codes, acoustics, maintenance, and long-term durability (as well as the design aesthetics) to say “it’s complicated” is an understatement. Fortunately, having ready access to reliable product information is within reach. This is particularly important when balancing sustainability practices with value engineering challenges.

Following LEED standards ensures that chosen products meet sustainability criteria, helps designers contribute to healthier indoor environments, and the third-party certification adds credibility, making clients less likely to substitute products or compromise environmental goals. While upfront costs might be slightly higher, the inherent value of LEED-certified products make them more resistant to specification changes. Interior designers play a crucial role in educating clients about these benefits and fostering cooperation throughout the project.

Through our collaborations with thousands of project teams and hundreds of designers, Green Badger has identified interior architectural finishes and furniture products linked to LEED attributes.

Using these essential products, along with others like them necessary for your team to accrue certification points, can prevent jeopardizing your beautiful finishes before installation.

The great news is you can instantly find and verify thousands of products for a LEED project, all consistently updated and easily referenced in Green Badger’s platform.

Guide to EPD and MIR: Options 1 & 2

It wouldn’t be a day ending in “Y” if someone at Green Badger didn’t have a conversation with a project team that resulted in the exasperated question of:

“What the F@%K do I need to do to earn this credit?”

While we could rant daily about the many “fun challenges” that come with earning LEED certification, we’re taking the high road. We strive to be solution providers, and firmly believe in our motto of “Sustainability Simplified”.

Download the Guide to EPDs and MIR Options 1 & 2

We believe that people want to do the right thing – they just want to know what it is, without having to slog through and figure out what to do. While this might be an overly general statement for everything in life, it tends to hold true in LEED.

Don’t make me guess what paint/drywall/pipe complies. Just tell me which ones to use that earn the credit! And I think USGBC hears that.

In the meantime, we’ve created a guide to help teams plan a strategy to earn two of the Building Product Disclosure and Optimization credits for v4 and v4.1 - Environmental Product Declarations and Material Ingredient Reporting.

EPD and MIR Option 2 Product Guide – January 2024 Update

There aren’t currently a lot of products that comply with Materials and Resources Option 2 optimization requirements. That's why we release EPD and MIR Option 2 product updates to keep your teams in the loop when new products hit the market.

Green Badger's product database has around 90 products that comply with EPD option 2 requirements right now, and around 350 products for MIR option 2. This might seem like a lot, but most of those are Sherwin Williams paints for EPD option 2. This is because each sheen of paint counts as a separate product, and Sherwin Williams has a lot of product lines with many different sheens available.
